Abstract
The study examined Technical Teacher Competencies Needs in Radio Communications for self reliance and socio economic development of Northern Nigeria. The study answered two research questions and tested 2 hypotheses. As a descriptive survey research design, a 51 item structured questionnaire designed by the researchers based on literature was used to collect data from the respondents. The instrument was validated by experts in the field of electrical technology education and measurement and evaluation. It was administered to all the 35 technical teachers from the seven (7) technical colleges in Northern Nigeria where Radio, Television and Electronics Works is taught, after it was trial tested on 7 respondents from a technical college outside the study area. The results of the two tests were correlated using the statistical package for social sciences (SPSS) version 17, to obtain the person product moment correlation coefficient (rho) of 0.90. The analysis of the results was carried out on the 35 valid copies of the questionnaire. Findings showed that technical teachers need retraining in all the areas of Competences Needs in Radio Communication Modules such as choosing appropriate instrument for fault detection and clearing in a radio receiver. Consequently, the study recommended, among others that technical college and similar technical training institutions should organize inhouse capacity building programmes for RTVEW teachers regularly.
