Abstract
This study effect of cooperative learning on academic achievement of technical college students in motor vehicle mechanic works in Adamawa state, was carried out to compare the achievements of students when taught using cooperative learning method of teaching and that of lecture method. It was a quasi-experimental design and was conducted in Adamawa state Nigeria, with a sample size of 49 NTC II motor vehicle mechanic works students in technical colleges. Two intact classes in the same school were used, and the classes were assigned as control and experimental groups. The instrument used for data collection was made of 30 multiple choice questions selected from past question papers for the years 2000 to 2015. The instrument was named Motor Vehicle Mechanic Work Auto Electricity Test (MVMWAET). The decision was that, any score of 70% and above was regarded as distinction, 50% - 69% was regarded as credit, 40% - 49% was regarded as pass and 0% - 39% was fail. The null hypothesis was rejected when the z-calculated is greater than the table value at 0. 05 level of significance. Otherwise, the null hypothesis was accepted when the calculated z-value is less than the z-table value. The findings revealed that, cooperative learning method is better than lecture method in the teaching and learning of motor vehicle mechanic works in technical colleges in Adamawa state. The study therefore recommends that, cooperative learning method of teaching should be made compulsory in all government technical colleges in Adamawa state. This will make the learners participate adequately in their lessons and improve their creativity and skills to solve their problems.
