Abstract
This study was carried out to determine the availability and utilization of workshop tools and equipment for teaching and learning of electrical installation and maintenance work trade in science and technical colleges in Benue State. Two research questions and one null hypothesis guided the descriptive survey research study. The population for the study was thirty-seven (37) respondents made up of twenty-eight (28) teachers of electrical installation and maintenance work trade who are currently teaching the trade and nine (9) workshop assistants who assist the teachers in distributing tools and equipment to students and supervising students??(TM) practical activities were drawn from nine science and technical colleges in Benue state. The instruments used for data collection were a checklist and a structured questionnaire. Frequency, percentage, mean and standard deviation were used to analyse data relating to the research questions, while t-test was used to test the null hypothesis. Findings indicate that workshop tools and equipment were not quite available; where they were found, some of them were not in good working condition. Findings also indicate that most of the workshop tools were not used for teaching. It was therefore recommended that science and technical colleges in the study area should equipped with the needed workshop tools and equipment according to NBTE standard and the broken down or obsolete ones should be repaired or replaced. Teachers should be re-trained by government on the use of modern workshop tools and equipment to enhance their productivity.
