Abstract
Poverty is about not having enough money to meet basic needs including food, clothing and shelter. Home Economics does not only ensure self-sufficiency for the individual and families but it also helps in the reduction of poverty. Home Economics education is an income generating opportunity be it in the area of food and nutrition, home management or clothing and textiles. This paper examines clothing and textiles education, pointing out different areas to create wealth and reduce poverty, specifically focusing on the place of tie and dye in creating wealth and reducing poverty in the family. The paper explains and shows how tie and dye can be produced. Some recommendations were given which include; the younger generation should be educated and encouraged on the need for them to identify with their traditional textiles because this is part of their cultural heritage and also that workers and other Nigerians should include tie and dye fabrics in their day to day wears in order to increase the patronage of tie and dye fabrics.
