Abstract
This study was carried out to determine the factors that influence students choice of subjects in Senior Schools Certificate Examinations (SSCE) in Yola South Local Government Area of Adamawa state. The study is guided by three research questions and three hypotheses. The three hypotheses were tested at 0.05 level of significance. The population of the study was 9668 SS1 students and 667 teachers of public senior secondary schools out of which 382 students and 242 teachers were sampled using simple random sampling techniques. The study adopted descriptive survey research design. The instrument for data collection was questionnaire titled ??oeFactors influencing Student Choice of Subject Questionnaire (FISCSQ). The instrument was validated by experts with reliability coefficient of 0.89. Data were analyzed using mean and standard deviation to answer research question while t-test was used to test the hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance. The findings of the study revealed that parents, peer group and availability of educational resources influence Students Choice of Subjects in Senior School Certificate Examinations. Based on the findings, it was recommended that Parent should not impose the choice of subjects on their children and government should ensure provision of career services, library and laboratory in schools. This will help in making worthwhile subject choice selection among students for Senior School Certificate Examinations.
