Abstract
This study was carried out to determine the pasture production skills required by herdsmen for a stabled security in Adamawa State. The study was guided by one research question and one hypothesis which was tested at alpha=0.05 level of significance. The study employed descriptive survey research design. The population for the study was 11,407. A total of 413 respondents comprising of a sample size of 386 herdsmen drawn using multistage sampling technique and 27 livestock extension agents were used for this study. A structured questionnaire titled “Pasture Production Skills Questionnaire (PPSQ)” was subjected to face validity by three experts. A reliability test of the instrument was conducted using Cronbach Alpha and the reliability coefficient was 0.87 after which it was used to collect data for the study. Frequency count, Mean and Standard Deviation were used to answer the research question while z-test was used to test the null hypothesis at alpha=0.05 level of significance. This study revealed that herdsmen in Adamawa State require 56pasture production skills to attain a stabled security. Such skills include: ability to transplant seedlings to the farm, capacity to use cuttings with at least 3 nodes, ability to use older cuttings among others. It was recommended that: Agricultural educators should develop the identified skills in a module for use by the livestock extension agents in training herdsmen on pasture production, Farming Skills Acquisition Centres in Adamawa state should use the identified skills in training herdsmen on pasture production, Ministry of Livestock and Aquaculture Development in Adamawa state should establish demonstration centres for the production and training of herdsmen on pasture production, Livestock extension personnel should make reference to the identified required skills for training herdsmen on pasture production.
