Abstract

The study was conducted to assess teaching competences of technical teachers teaching in technical colleges in Gombe State of Nigeria. It specifically determined the level of academic and teaching qualification, teaching pedagogy and competence in assessment of instructional objectives as they are possessed by technical teachers. Four research questions and three null hypotheses were formulated. The population of the study was 124 comprising of 54 college administrative staff and 70 technical teachers. The entire population was used. A descriptive survey research design was used for the study and the instrument used for data collection was a structured questionnaire. A pilot study was conducted to determine the reliability of the instrument. Data was computed using Cronbach's Alpha formula which yielded a reliability coefficient ranging from 0.87. Percentage (%) was used to answer research question 1 while mean was used to answer question 2, 3 and 4. T-test statistics was used to analyze the two null hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance. The findings of the study revealed that; 38 out of 70 of the technical teachers possess the required minimum academic and teaching qualification for teaching in technical college, technical teachers possess most of the pedagogic competences required of them. Finally the findings revealed that improvement is needed in skill aspects of teacher training for effective teaching of trade areas. Therefore, it was recommended that adequate technical teachers should be employed, and existing non-professional teachers should be encouraged to obtain required teaching qualification. Induction training and workshops should be organized for technical teachers in emerging and new skills
