Abstract

Successful round of ceramic firing depends on the accurate and efficient measurement of heat work within the kiln chamber. These form the basis for the formulation of a pyrometric conc. This paper reports the experimental procedure for the formulation and test of pyrometric cones that can measure temperature within the range of 1230°C to 1280°C using locally sourced silicate materials. Standard recommended procedure for the formulation of the cones were strictly adhered to; beginning with the processing of the raw materials to the finished product. The end point of the procedure showed the control cone (Segar cone 9) and the formulated test cone 9 fusing almost simultaneously. This empirical evidence provided an overwhelming inference that, locally sourced silicate materials are viable alternative for the formulation of pyrometric test cones.
