Abstract

The purpose of the study was to appraise building maintenance practices and safety measures in Government Science and Technical Colleges in Kano State Nigeria. Two research questions were raised to guide the study and one null hypothesis was also formulated and tested at 0.05 level of significance. The study adopted descriptive survey research design. The population of the study was 18 respondents, comprising of 3 schools administrators 3 safety officers, 5 technicians 3 Engineers and 4 maintenance officers in both Government Science and Technical Colleges of Kano State. The instrument used for data collection was a 90-items structured questionnaire titled: Appraisal of building maintenance practice and Safety Measures in Government Science and Technical Colleges in Kano State (ASMBGSTCKS).The instrument was validated by four experts. The reliability coefficient of the instruments was found to be 0.840 using Cronbach alpha methods. Mean and standard deviation were used to answer the research questions with bench mark of 3.50 as index for agreeing with any of the questionnaire item, and the null hypothesis was tested using ANOVA. The findings of the study, among others, revealed that Government Science and Technical Colleges in Kano state does not practiced safety measures like: establishing safety, identify all water quality operational deficiencies, initiating. Scheduling for replacement of worn out parts, involving stakeholders in the planning process in Government Science and Technical Colleges Kano State. Based on the findings of the study, it was recommended among others that, establishing safety priorities, target in Government Science and Technical Colleges building, programme estimate for keeping pedestrian paths well lighted for safety in buildings which presently found in Government Science and Technical Colleges Kano State.
