Abstract

This study investigated the relationship between school discipline strategies and academic achievement of senior secondary school adolescent students in mathematics in Adamawa State. The target population of the study comprised of all Senior Secondary III students in Adamawa State. A sample size of 392 was selected using Taro Yamann formula. The sample was selected from 30 senior secondary schools in 3 education zones out of the 5 education zones in the state. Two instruments were used for data collection; a proforma to collect WASSCE 2017 result and a 30-item Discipline Strategies Questionnaire (DSQ) constructed by the researcher. Data generated were analyzed using Pearson Product moment correlation coefficient while mean and standard deviation were to used to answer research questions. The study discovered that the preventive school discipline strategy predicted academic achievement of adolescents’ students in Adamawa state( p(0.009) < 0.05, r – value (0.19) whereas intervention and postvention discipline strategies did not predict the academic achievement of the adolescent students’, (P(0.17) > 0.05, r-value (-0.10) and P(0.411) > 0.05, r –value (0.06). Based on the findings, it was recommended that the school authorities should adopt preventive school discipline strategy to curb indiscipline behaviours being exhibited by adolescents’ students in Adamawa State.
