Abstract

The study determined the soft-skills required of undergraduate business education students for sustenance in Bauchi State, Nigeria. The study had four specific objectives and four research questions which were meant to guide the study. The study adopted a descriptive survey research design which is purely quantitative, using structured questionnaires which were administered to 328 management staff of public and private organizations in Bauchi state, Nigeria. Data collected was analyzed using mean and standard deviations. The findings of the study revealed that problemsolving skills, communication skills, critical thinking skills and leadership skills are required by undergraduate business education students for sustenance in Bauchi State, Nigeria. Therefore, the issue that remain a matter of concern in which Business education graduates that cannot sustain their businesses or jobs and that, even those who are gainfully employed are not performing as expected in a workplace can be improved by exposing undergraduate business education students to problem-solving skills, communication skills, critical thinking skills and leadership skills. This study recommended that, the management of tertiary institutions in Bauchi state should encourage business education lecturers through seminars and workshops to emphasize and impart the softskills like problem-solving skills, communication skills, critical thinking skills and leadership skills to undergraduate business education students as these will enable graduates of business education to sustain their businesses jobs and perform better in the work place.
